Steel and the Force: How Steel Shaped the Star Wars Universe
May the Fourth be with you – Happy Holidays, Star Wars fans!
Today, we’re celebrating the most important day in sci-fi history by sharing some behind the scenes information that only the most loyal fans would know. How is the Star Wars universe built on steel?
Steel is undoubtedly one of the most important inventions of our time, creating the foundation for everything from the Brooklyn Bridge to the shed in your backyard. It’s no wonder that steel is also the backbone of the Star Wars Universe – even in our wildest dreams, a fantasy world couldn’t exist without it. The weight-to-strength ratio found only in steel seems to make the impossible possible! One of the key components of this sci-fi powerhouse is the perfect balance of reality and fantasy. How does man-made steel become even more powerful in a world without bounds like the Star Wars universe?
Where do you find steel in the Star Wars universe?
Quadanium steel plays an important role in Star Wars, most notably as the exterior building material for the Death Star I and Death Star II. Quadanium’s ability to be alloyed with other metals made it a flexible building material.
But where did the steel come from? Here on Earth, steel is a manmade material created by lowering the carbon content of iron. The result is a metal that’s more flexible than cast iron and stronger than wrought iron. But in the Star Wars universe, Quadanium steel comes from the jungle planet Despayre, where the Galactic Empire hosts their shipyard for ease of construction. The material is so powerful and resilient than the entire planet eventually fell victim to the Death Star. Talk about irony! (We promise, no more bad metal puns in this article.)
What types of steel would you find in the Star Wars universe?
Weapons and everyday items alike are seemingly indestructible in the Star Wars universe. The TIE fighters piloted by Stormtroopers are made of quadanium steel, but the real magic is in the windows. The view ports on TIE fighters and most other ships are actually made of transparisteel – a shatterproof transparent alloy of steel and lommite – rather than glass.
Most other key pieces of the Star Wars universe like armor and weapons are made with Durasteel. It’s incredible resistance to damage from striking makes it the perfect material for battle. In fact, Darth Vader’s entire suit of armor is made from Durasteel. The most heavily armored land vehicles in the Imperial Army, the AT-AT walkers, are crafted with high-grade Durasteel.
Which weapons were made using steel?
Long before the Jedi fought with lightsabers, their weapon of choice was the force-imbued blade. With the power of “Madog steel,” these swords could be manipulated with Jedi Force. The blade would illuminate with a yellow “energy glow” when the Force was used, making it practically indestructible.
Lightsabers could certainly benefit from the lightweight strength of steel, but a variety of metals could be used. In fact, many early lightsabers were made of wood! The most common metal found in the base of the lightsaber is Mandalorian iron, which is said to be strong enough to resist the cut of a lightsaber.
