The Right Steel Building Insulation Saves Energy and Lowers Your Energy bill.

Getting the Right Metal Building Insulation

If you haven’t heard, insulation helps save energy and lower energy bills as well. The U.S. Department of Energy’s website says heating and cooling account for 50% to 70% of the energy used in the average American home. To substantially reduce energy costs, decrease the amount of energy needed for heating and cooling your prefabricated metal building, Steel Building Insulation it is an excellent place to start. Here are some helpful facts about insulation and energy efficiency.

Anatomy of a Steel BuildingInsulation works around the clock

  • Insulation requires no energy to save energy, once manufactured. It prevents energy from being wasted. And, barring any damage, it never needs replacing and will last for the life of your prefab building.

Insulation is green and saves you green in the process

  • According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, ENERGY STAR HOMES, insulation saves over 600 times more energy each year than all the compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), Energy Star Appliances, and Energy Star windows combined. And, just like prefabricated steel buildings, Steel Building Insulation can be recycled.

Not all Insulation are Created Equal

  • Fiberglass, wool, or spray foam are energy efficient technologies, that, when installed correctly can reduce the amount of energy used. The operative phrase being “installed correctly.” Be mindful when considering spray foam. Problems can arise from improper installation of this type of insulation, such as:
  • Spray foam isn’t thick enough- The thickness of the insulation dictates the R-Value and adds to the overall performance of insulation. Using an under-performing R-Value will negatively affect energy efficiency and possibly your ability to receive building permits. Check with your local building or code department to verify what is needed.
  • Air leaks can amass if not installed correctly. Seeing exactly where the building envelope is can be difficult. Every part of the structure envelope must be insulated, or your steel building will have considerable heat/cooling loss.

Health Concerns about Spray Polyurethane Foam

  • According to the EPA, “homeowners who are exposed to isocyanates and other spray foam chemicals in vapors, aerosols, and dust during or after the installation process “run the risk of developing asthma, sensitization, lung damage, other respiratory and breathing problems, and skin and eye irritation.” (EPA, 2013)
