RV Storage: What Is The True Cost?

What Is The True Cost of RV Storage?

Congratulations! You’re on your way to becoming the proud owner of your first recreational vehicle. You’ve compared models, found a purchase price you’re comfortable with, and mapped out your first trip. You’re practically already on the road, right? If you’re planning on becoming an RV owner, it’s important to understand that the real cost of ownership stretches far beyond the purchase price. Of course, just like with any other vehicle, there will always be maintenance and insurance costs. But have you considered the cost of RV storage in the offseason? Your overall budget for purchasing an RV should always include the cost of storage.

Why do I need RV storage?

The average motorhome ranges from 25 to 40 feet in length, easily blocking an entire driveway. Depending on the space you have available, keeping your RV parked in front of your home could be more than an inconvenience. It could also violate neighborhood covenants or require extra landscape maintenance.

Due to the detachment from your home, RVs can also be an easy target for theft and vandalism. Finding a convenient means of storage is the safest bet for adding a layer of security to your motorhome, not only from vandals but also from the outside elements.

What are my RV storage options?

Start by considering the amount of square footage you will need. For example, a Class A RV may run up to 40 feet in length, whereas a Class B will only require up to 19 feet. All RVs will be under 14 feet in height.

If you have the space to accommodate a structure on your property, carports are a cost-effective solution for RV storage. A metal RV storage carport can be customized to protect your vehicle from a variety of harsh weather conditions. Once you’ve determined the length and width of your desired RV, you can estimate the cost of a standard carport without customizations. Costs to put up a carport on your property start at about $1100.

If you’d like to store your RV offsite, it’s time to start looking for a designated RV storage facility.

Types of RV Storage Facilities

While storage facilities can be found in nearly every town in America, most facilities aren’t equipped to accommodate indoor RV storage. You’ll want to find a facility that is built for this specific purpose, especially if you need extra protection from the elements. While indoor RV storage is the most expensive option, you may save money that would be spent on repairing damages. The cost of indoor storage will depend on the amenities offered. For example, heated RV storage in areas with harsh winters may cost upwards of $400 a month. If a heated facility isn’t necessary, you can expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $125.

If you’re looking to spend less money on storage, but still appreciate a particular layer of protection, some facilities offer covered storage. Otherwise, outdoor storage is the most common and inexpensive option. The cost can also vary significantly based on amenities. Gravel lots will be less expensive than paved, and you can expect to pay a premium for any services you may need during your storage period, such as regular battery charging. On average, you can expect your base fee for outdoor storage to range anywhere from $30 to $100 a month.

To save money on storage, you’ll want to do as much as possible to prepare for the offseason yourself. Avoid paying a premium for services offered by your storage facility by:

● completing your own pest control
● lubricating moving parts
● washing your RV
● Invest in a quality RV cover
● disconnecting propane tanks
● draining sewage

What is the most cost-effective option for RV storage?

If you’re looking for high levels of service and total protection for your RV, you’ll have to pay a premium price. Indoor or outdoor RV storage facilities may charge anywhere from $30 to over $400 a month, depending on the amenities. If you have the space to accommodate on your own property, a metal carport is the most cost-effective option while still protecting your vehicle from the elements. Metal carports provide unbeatable protection from weather, with customizations available to prevent theft and vandalization in ways that RV covers can’t.
