The Aero Center FBO in Wilmington, North Carolina is an 18,000 square foot aviation facility built to support the daily pace of a working airport. Coastal Steel Structures supplied the steel hangar building system using a PEMB approach that prioritized strength, efficiency, and long term reliability.
This prefabricated steel hangar building brings aircraft fueling, aviation maintenance, and hangar space together under one roof. It supports private jet owners and operators, aviation repair organizations, and other airport users who need a space that functions smoothly day in and day out. The layout was designed to be practical, easy to navigate, and flexible enough to adapt as operations grow.

Challenges
This project didn’t have just one big issue. It had a lot of smaller ones that stacked up. The building had to meet strict airport and environmental requirements, but it also needed to look like a place people want to work and fly into. That balance wasn’t automatic and it took effort from everyone involved.
Steel prices were changing constantly, which made budgeting and material decisions harder than planned. Manufacturing delays pushed schedules around. The design team was still learning how pre-engineered steel buildings really come together, which meant extra revisions. Late in the build, the general contractor was replaced due to quality problems, right when timing mattered most.
Solutions
Coastal Steel Structures didn’t step back when things got difficult. We stepped in deeper. We worked directly with architects and erectors to sort out PEMB details, flag issues early, and make sure drawings matched real world construction, not just theory.
We pushed hard on procurement, locking in materials early to control costs and reduce exposure to price swings. When manufacturing delays hit, we reworked schedules instead of letting the job stall. When the general contractor was replaced, we helped stabilize the site, reset expectations, and coordinate the transition so work could continue. It wasn’t about saving face. It was about finishing strong and delivering a steel hangar building that performs every day.
