Skybridge Miami Opa-Locka Airport

The Miami Opa Locka Executive Airport hangar development is an ongoing project and part of a 90 million dollar private aviation campus taking shape in one of the toughest building environments in the country. South Florida brings strict regulations, hurricane exposure, and constant scrutiny. Coastal Steel Structures was selected through a competitive bid process to deliver the pre engineered steel building systems for ten clear span steel hangars designed to meet Miami Dade County High Velocity Hurricane Zone requirements.
These are not basic storage buildings. Each aircraft hangar steel building is being constructed to support private jet operations, leasing tenants, and integrated terminal functions. The structures must perform under extreme weather conditions while maintaining long term durability and structural integrity in a coastal environment.
The clear span layouts create open, flexible interiors that will accommodate a range of aircraft while allowing space for lounges, reception areas, and operational support areas. The goal is clear. Protect high value assets and create a professional aviation environment that meets the expectations of private jet owners and operators.

Challenges
Located in Miami Dade County’s High Velocity Hurricane Zone, the project operates within one of the strictest code environments in the country. Every wall panel, roof assembly, and fastening system required a Miami Dade Notice of Acceptance. Engineering calculations aligned with certified assemblies, and inspections left no room for documentation or coordination errors. Maintaining consistency from design through fabrication required disciplined oversight and steady communication.
The aircraft hangar steel buildings are engineered for wind speeds up to 175 miles per hour. As partially enclosed, clear span structures without interior columns, the primary framing system resists lateral forces and uplift. Structural efficiency was critical. Overdesign increases cost and weight. Under design risks performance.
Part of a 90 million dollar aviation campus, the project expanded midstream to include additional terminal scope. Eight hangars were erected simultaneously under an aggressive schedule, requiring extended workweeks, tight coordination, and strict structural control in a highly visible environment.
Solutions
Coastal Steel Structures approached High Velocity Hurricane Zone compliance with preparation, not reaction. Our manufacturing partners have extensive experience delivering steel hangar buildings in hurricane-exposed regions, including Miami-Dade County. Through our national manufacturer network, we sourced wall and roof systems already approved for HVHZ use, reducing friction early. Engineering calculations were aligned with certified assemblies prior to submittal, and documentation was tightly managed to maintain inspection readiness and schedule momentum.
Engineering these aircraft hangar steel buildings for extreme wind required disciplined structural optimization. As partially enclosed, clear span structures, they must resist significant lateral pressure and uplift through the primary framing system. We applied focused value engineering within the pre-engineered building system to meet performance criteria without unnecessary material escalation.
In the field, eight hangars were erected simultaneously under a coordinated sequencing plan aligning manpower, cranes, and deliveries. Extended workweeks were executed with zero safety incidents. When an additional terminal scope was introduced, we adjusted quickly, protecting the schedule and maintaining campus-wide alignment.

Chris, We wanted to take a moment and thank you for your continued support and good products in the horse industry. BRS entered into this Market in 2014 and since then we have built 4 structures with you including 3 indoor arenas and a large Commercial Garage. Your product is of top quality and your support with the engineered drawings is outstanding. You take your time when you are with us and do not rush us out the door. Also, when there were any field discrepancies you jumped at the opportunity to make it right. For that, we thank you and hope to do business with you well into the future. Have a great night.

Our family has been in the Equine Industry for 30 years. We have dealt with countless contractors and suppliers. After many, many years of wishing and hoping, we were able to complete our dream of erecting a Covered Arena. Coastal Steel Structures made this possible with their more than fair pricing for our building. Every one we came in contact with were friendly, courteous and helpful. The building was delivered correctly and timely. We would highly recommend them for any steel buildings you may need.

Proven Coast to Coast
Built on Trust. Proven by Repeat Business.
Our business wasn’t built on first impressions — it was built on repeat business. The contractors, architects, and erectors who choose us once tend to keep choosing us, and refer the ones who come after them.
That’s how a company rooted in South Florida ended up building in nearly every region of the country. Clear communication, honest guidance, and real accountability don’t just deliver a great steel building. They build the kind of trust that travels.
